The combination of strength, toughness, and hardness found in Hickory makes it a great material for tool handles.
"Beautiful and well-made tools. A joy to look at and to use. Lovely as a special gift for a friend or yourself!" -Kari C.
I hand build each of these sturdy all-purpose trowels. The natural finished Shagbark Hickory handle is 14″ long (overall tool length is 22″). The combination of strength, toughness, and hardness found in Hickory is found in no other commercial wood and is why it is prized as a great material for tool handles. I forge each tool by hand and finish the wood handle with the bark on. The wood handle is slotted and the tool is inset into the slot then riveted all the way through with brass rivets. The wide blade holds a lot of soil and the pointed shape allow you to use it in the field. It is great for working in raised beds too! The subtle patina and extra length give this tool a great balance and modern flair.
Our classic heirloom quality tools riveted by hand to natural finished Shagbark Hickory handles creates this newest collection of “Shaggy Bark” tools from Fisher Blacksmithing. In making these tools, I have used stout twigs of the Shagbark Hickory tree (a member of the Walnut family). Dig deeper, reach wider and really get down in the garden! Enjoy the aesthetics and utility a one of kind creation made just for a gardener and lover of fine things.
